Kashmir Travel Guide
Kashmir is the one Indian destination that consistently exceeds expectations. Dal Lake at dawn, the meadows above Pahalgam, the gondola at Gulmarg climbing into snow — it delivers scenery that competes with Switzerland at a fraction of the cost.

Why travellers choose Kashmir
The houseboat experience on Dal Lake is unique in India — carved cedar interiors, breakfast delivered by shikara, and the lake waking up around you.
Three very different day trips radiate from Srinagar: Gulmarg for the gondola and snow, Pahalgam for the Lidder valley and Betaab, and Sonamarg for the Thajiwas glacier.
It is the most affordable snow destination for Indian families. Gulmarg in winter offers genuine snow play and skiing without a passport or a foreign currency budget.
What not to miss in Kashmir
- Dal Lake and shikara ride — A houseboat night and a sunset shikara through the floating gardens.
- Gulmarg Gondola — One of the highest cable cars in the world, in two phases to Apharwat Peak.
- Pahalgam — Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari, with pony rides through pine forest.
- Sonamarg — The Thajiwas glacier and the gateway to the Amarnath and Ladakh routes.
- Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi terraced above the lake.
- Doodhpathri and Yusmarg — Quieter alpine meadows for travellers who would rather avoid the crowds.
When to travel
April and May bring blossom and the tulip garden in Srinagar. June to August offers the greenest meadows and the most comfortable temperatures, and is peak family season. September and October give crisp air and autumn chinar colour. December to February brings snow, with Gulmarg at its best, though some roads close periodically.
Entry and paperwork
No visa or permit is needed for Indian citizens. Carry government photo identification, as it is checked at various points. Mobile connectivity can be intermittent in outlying areas, and prepaid connections from other states sometimes do not work — we brief you before travel.
