Everyone else applies for a visitor visa at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India.

  • Bank statements for the last three to six months

Common mistakes that get Indians refused

  • Travel history to the listed countries alone does not qualify you for the TAC; you must hold the visa or residence document.
  • The TAC runs as a trial scheme renewed periodically; check its current terms before relying on it.
  • TECC India accepts consular submissions only on weekday mornings, roughly 9 to 11 am; arrive early.
  • A TAC allows 14 days per visit; for longer trips apply for the visitor visa.

Do Indians need a visa for Taiwan?

Yes, in one of two forms. Which one depends on what is already in your passport.

  • Free Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC): for Indians holding a valid visa or permanent residence from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea or a Schengen country. Apply online, get the certificate within minutes, and stay up to 14 days per visit. The TAC is valid for 90 days with multiple entries.
  • Visitor visa: for everyone else, applied for at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC), Taiwan's representative office in India, with offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

The TAC route, step by step

  1. Check your qualifying document. Past rules have also accepted some recently expired visas, but terms change, so read the current conditions on the portal.
  2. Apply on the Taiwan immigration agency's online TAC page with your passport and qualifying visa details.
  3. Print the certificate; there is no fee.
  4. Carry it with the passport holding your qualifying visa, and show both at check-in and at Taoyuan airport.

The TECC visitor visa, step by step

  1. Fill in the online visa application form on Taiwan's consular affairs portal and print it.
  2. Gather documents: passport, photos, bank statements, income tax returns, an employment letter, return tickets, hotel bookings and an itinerary.
  3. Submit at TECC on a weekday morning; consular submissions are accepted roughly between 9 and 11 am.
  4. Pay the fee, roughly ₹3,500–5,000 depending on visa type.
  5. Collect the passport after about five to seven working days.

What officers check

At TECC, officials look at finances, employment and a realistic itinerary. At Taoyuan airport, immigration is polite and orderly; officers check the TAC or visa and occasionally ask about the hotel and return date.

Families and seniors

Each traveller needs their own TAC or visa. Taiwan is one of the easier East Asian destinations for older travellers and vegetarians: the MRT and high-speed rail are step-free in most places, hospitals are excellent, and Buddhist vegetarian restaurants are common, though Jain diets still need planning.

If your trip combines Taiwan with Japan or South Korea, apply for those visas first. A Japanese or Korean visa in your passport may then qualify you for the free TAC.

Read the Japan visa guide, South Korea visa guide and Hong Kong visa guide for combinations. Our travel insurance and visa assistance teams can handle the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can Indians visit Taiwan without a visa?
Not without any paperwork. Indians holding a valid visa or permanent residence from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea or a Schengen country can apply online for a free Travel Authorization Certificate allowing 14 days per visit. Everyone else needs a visitor visa from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India.
How long does the Taiwan TAC take and how long is it valid?
The online TAC is usually issued within minutes once you submit your passport and qualifying visa details. It is valid for 90 days with multiple entries, and each visit can last up to 14 days. Print it and carry it with the passport containing your qualifying visa.
Where do Indians apply for a Taiwan visitor visa?
At the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center, which acts as Taiwan's representative office in India, with offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Fill in the online form first, then submit documents in person on a weekday morning. Processing usually takes five to seven working days.
Is Taiwan good for vegetarian Indian travellers?
Better than most of East Asia. Taiwan has many Buddhist vegetarian restaurants and buffets, and convenience stores label vegetarian items. Jain travellers still need care, since onion and garlic are common outside strictly Buddhist kitchens. Carry a printed card in Chinese explaining your diet.
