Rajasthan is India at its most cinematic — hill forts, lake palaces, painted cities and camel camps in the Thar. It is also one of the easiest states to travel in, with good roads linking cities that are each worth two nights.

The heritage hotels are the differentiator. Staying inside a converted fort or a lakeside palace changes the trip entirely, and Rajasthan offers more of them, at more price points, than anywhere else in India.

Each city has a distinct character: Jaipur's pink planned streets, Udaipur's lakes, Jodhpur's blue houses beneath Mehrangarh, and Jaisalmer's living golden fort.

When to travel

October to March is the season — warm days, cool nights and the desert at its most comfortable. December and January can be genuinely cold at night in the desert. April to June is very hot, often above 45°C, and best avoided. July to September brings some rain, which greens the landscape and lowers rates considerably.

Entry and paperwork

No visa or permit is needed for Indian citizens. Some forts and museums close on specific days, and photography charges apply at several monuments — we include these in your quote so there are no cash surprises on site.
