Why We Do Not Put Dates on Our Tour Packages

Fixed departures exist for the operator's convenience, not the traveller's. Here is what changes when you take the calendar out of the equation.

Open almost any travel website and the first thing you are asked to do is pick a departure date from a list. Miss it by three days and the trip you wanted does not exist. We think that is backwards, and we built our packages the other way round.

Where fixed departures come from

Fixed departures are an operational convenience. They let an operator fill a coach, negotiate a block of rooms and lock an air fare. All of that is real, and it is why the model has survived. But every one of those benefits accrues to the operator. The traveller gets a list of dates and is asked to make their life fit.

The trouble is that almost nobody's travel window is arbitrary. Leave is approved for a particular fortnight. Schools break when they break. A wedding is on a date somebody else chose. A parent's medical appointment does not move. When we sold fixed departures, the most common sentence we heard was some version of "that's a lovely itinerary, but not that week".

What we publish instead

Every package on this site carries the route, the duration in nights and days, the cities with the nights in each, the inclusions, the exclusions and the hotel category. Everything you need to judge whether the holiday is right for you — and nothing about when it runs.

You tell us the window. We confirm availability, hotel rates and air fares for those specific days and send a costed itinerary. If your dates fall in a cheaper season, you see that in the price rather than paying a blended annual rate.

What this changes in practice

Group tours still work. This surprises people. We form groups around demand windows rather than publishing a calendar in advance, and we tell you honestly how many travellers are currently in your window. If it is too thin to operate well, we say so and suggest an alternative.

Pricing gets more honest. A single published price for a whole year is either too high for the quiet months or too low for the peak ones. Quoting your actual dates means the number reflects what the trip genuinely costs then.

You can be flexible profitably. When travellers tell us their dates can move by a week, we can often show a meaningful saving. That conversation is impossible when the only options are fixed.

The one trade-off

You cannot book instantly at two in the morning. There is a conversation first, and for a small number of travellers that is a genuine downside. For most, given that a holiday represents weeks of salary and months of anticipation, a conversation with someone who knows the destination is not the worst thing to have to endure.

How to start

Find an itinerary you like, send an enquiry with a rough window, and we will come back within a working day with what it costs for your days. If you are not sure of the destination at all, tell us the budget and the kind of holiday you want — that is often a better place to start.
