The one question that decides it
Are you happy doing nothing for five days?
If the honest answer is yes — you want water, a villa, good food and no schedule — the Maldives is better and it is not close. If one of you would be restless by day three, Mauritius will make you both happier.
What the Maldives actually is
One island, one resort. You arrive, and that is where you are until you leave. There is no town to walk to, no restaurant outside the resort, nothing to see beyond the lagoon and the reef.
Which sounds limiting and is precisely the appeal. The water genuinely does look like the photographs. An overwater villa with steps into the lagoon is a real thing rather than a marketing image. For couples who have just survived a wedding, doing nothing in a beautiful place is often exactly right.
Practical points: all-inclusive is nearly always worth it, since there is nowhere else to eat and island pricing is steep. Choose your island by house reef quality if you want to snorkel. And take the speedboat resorts seriously — seaplanes only fly in daylight, which constrains your flights and can force an unplanned night in Malé.
What Mauritius actually is
A country with beaches attached. There are mountains, waterfalls, a capital with a working market, tea estates, a volcanic crater, botanical gardens and the seven-coloured earths at Chamarel. You can hire a car and drive around the island in a day.
The beaches are genuinely good, if not quite Maldivian. What you gain is the ability to have a day out — a catamaran cruise to Île aux Cerfs, a morning at Grand Bassin, an afternoon in Port Louis — and come back to the resort in the evening.
For Indian couples there is also a cultural connection that surprises people. A large part of the population traces ancestry to India, Bhojpuri is widely spoken, and Grand Bassin is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site.
Cost
For similar quality, Mauritius usually works out lower, mainly because you are not paying for a private island's logistics. The Maldives can be done affordably at the lower end of the resort range, but the overwater villa most couples picture sits well above that.
How long
Maldives: four to five nights on one island. Longer and even committed do-nothing couples start to fidget. Mauritius: six to seven nights, because there is enough to fill them.
Our usual recommendation
First honeymoon, want the overwater villa photograph, happy to be still — Maldives. Want beaches plus something to see, travelling with a partner who does not relax easily, or watching the budget — Mauritius.
