Quick answer

Pack light cottons and linens, two sets of swimwear, a cover-up, flip-flops and one pair of walking sandals, SPF 50 sunscreen, a hat and mosquito repellent. Carry your original driving licence if you plan to rent a scooter. In the monsoon, from June to September, add a rain jacket and quick-dry clothes. A three- or four-night trip fits in a 7 kg cabin bag.

Documents & money

  • Photo ID — Hotels in Goa ask for ID from every adult guest.
  • Original driving licence — Needed to rent a scooter or car; weekend police checks are frequent.
  • UPI app and some cash — Smaller shacks and taxis prefer cash or UPI over cards.
  • Booking confirmations on your phone
  • ID copies in DigiLocker
  • Personal accident or travel insurance — Useful if you plan water sports or ride scooters.

Clothing

  • Cotton and linen shirts and T-shirts
  • Shorts and light trousers
  • Light dresses or kaftans
  • Beach cover-up or sarong — Swimwear is fine on the sand, not in markets or restaurants.
  • One modest outfit — Old Goa's churches expect shoulders and knees covered.
  • One smart-casual outfit — Some beach clubs turn away men in shorts and flip-flops at night.
  • Light layer for December evenings and scooter rides
  • Light rain jacket (June–September)

Swim & beach gear

  • Swimwear, two sets
  • Rash guard — Sun protection for parasailing, kayaking and boat days.
  • Flip-flops
  • Walking sandals with straps
  • Dry bag — For dolphin trips and boat rides to Grande Island.
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Quick-dry towel — Many hotels don't let pool towels go to the beach.
  • Beach bag

Sun & health

  • Water-resistant sunscreen, SPF 50
  • Aloe vera or after-sun gel
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • Mosquito repellent — Dengue cases rise during and after the monsoon.
  • ORS sachets — Humidity and beer dehydrate you faster than you expect.
  • Antacids and anti-diarrhoea tablets
  • Regular prescription medicines
  • Plasters and antiseptic — Rocky coves cut feet.

Electronics

  • Phone charger and power bank
  • Earphones
  • Action camera — Handy for water sports.
  • Offline maps — North Goa village lanes confuse even phone navigation.
  • E-reader for beach afternoons
  • Spare charging cable

Toiletries

  • Travel-size toiletries — Liquids in cabin bags are capped at 100 ml each; buy big sunscreen bottles in Goa.
  • Moisturiser and lip balm with SPF
  • Deodorant
  • Wet wipes and hand sanitiser
  • Hair ties and a wide-tooth comb — Salt and humidity tangle hair.
  • Ziplock bags for wet swimwear

What does Goa's weather mean for your bag?

From October to March, Goa runs at 31–33°C by day with high humidity, and December and January nights dip to about 20°C, cool enough for a light layer on a scooter. April and May are hotter and stickier. From June to September, heavy monsoon rain brings rough seas and red flags on most beaches, so swap linen for quick-dry clothes and pack a proper rain jacket.

Can you go cabin-only?

Three or four nights in Goa fits in a 7 kg cabin bag: two swimsuits, four or five light outfits, one smart-casual set, flip-flops and walking sandals. Some domestic fares include cabin baggage only, so check yours. Liquids in the cabin are capped at 100 ml each; buy a big sunscreen at a Goa pharmacy rather than paying for a checked bag.

Dress codes that catch people out

Swimwear is normal on the beach but not in markets, restaurants or Panaji's streets; carry a cover-up. The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral expect shoulders and knees covered. Some beach clubs turn away men in shorts and flip-flops after dark.

What to rent or buy in Goa

Scooters rent for roughly ₹350–600 a day, more around Christmas and New Year; you need your original licence and a helmet. Sarongs, hats and beach bags are cheap at the Anjuna and Mapusa markets. Don't pack snorkel kit, because boat operators lend it.

Rules on carrying Goa-bought liquor into other states are strict and enforced at road checkposts. Check your home state's limit before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a driving licence to rent a scooter in Goa?
Yes. Rental shops and the police both expect a valid licence covering two-wheelers, and fines for riding without one or without a helmet are common at weekend checks. A DigiLocker or mParivahan copy is valid at police checks, but most rental shops want to see the original card.
What should I wear in Goa away from the beach?
Light cottons and linens work everywhere, but carry a cover-up for markets, restaurants and towns. Churches such as the Basilica of Bom Jesus expect shoulders and knees covered, and some beach clubs refuse shorts and flip-flops for men after dark. One smart-casual outfit covers dinners and clubs.
Can I carry alcohol back from Goa?
Carefully. Your home state's excise rules apply once you cross the border, and checkposts on the Maharashtra and Karnataka borders regularly seize Goa liquor carried beyond the allowed limit. Gujarat is a dry state. If you fly, sealed bottles go in checked baggage within airline limits. Check your state's current allowance before you buy.
