Dubai's reputation for expense is half deserved. You can absolutely spend a fortune. You can also have an excellent four nights without doing so, provided you know which costs actually matter.
Where the money genuinely goes
Not the hotel — Dubai has enormous four-star capacity and rates outside peak season are reasonable. The real costs are attractions and taxis.
Burj Khalifa, a desert safari, a dhow cruise, an aquarium, a waterpark and a theme park, for a family of four, adds up faster than most people budget for. Six attractions can easily exceed the accommodation cost for the trip.
The attraction decision
Pick three, not six. Our recommendation for a first visit: Burj Khalifa at sunset, one desert safari, and one thing chosen by whoever you are travelling with — a waterpark for children, a Marina cruise for couples.
Then fill the rest with things that cost almost nothing. The Dubai Fountain show is free and runs every half hour after dark. The abra across the creek costs a single dirham and is the most enjoyable few minutes in the city. The gold and spice souks are free to wander. Kite Beach and JBR beach are free. The Al Fahidi historic quarter is free and genuinely interesting.
Transport
The metro is clean, air-conditioned and goes almost everywhere a visitor needs. A Nol card costs very little and will save a family a substantial amount over four days of taxis. Stay near a metro station and this becomes easy.
When to go
Peak season pricing is roughly double the summer rate for the same hotel. If you can tolerate heat and plan around indoor attractions, the low season is dramatically cheaper. The shoulder months are the genuine sweet spot — warm but manageable, and priced well below peak.
Food
This is where Dubai is genuinely cheap if you want it to be. Karama and Deira have excellent Indian and Pakistani restaurants at Indian prices. Hotel breakfast plus one modest lunch and one good dinner keeps food costs low without eating badly.
The saving that costs you
Do not book a hotel far out to save on the room rate. Dubai is spread out, and a hotel forty minutes from anywhere converts your savings into taxi fares and lost hours. Pay slightly more for somewhere on the metro line.
A realistic four-night budget
